Hash generator

MD5 and SHA are computed in the browser; text and files are never uploaded. bcrypt is computed on the server.

bcrypt

bcrypt uses only the first 72 bytes of the text.

A hash function turns data of any size into a fixed-length string. MD5 and SHA-1 are obsolete for passwords and signatures but still used to verify file integrity. SHA-256 and SHA-512 are the modern standard for checksums and signatures.

bcrypt is a slow function for storing passwords: the cost parameter sets the number of rounds, and each increment doubles the time. To check a password against a bcrypt hash you need a verify function such as password_verify in PHP, because every call produces a new hash due to the random salt.
